Researchers have made a new discovery that offers encouraging news for those battling baldness.
Scientists have discovered vitamin D seems to stimulate hair follicles that have shutdown in men with hair extreme hair loss.
How Vitamin D works
“It’s how the vitamin D is being handled by the receptors in the follicles that may be part of the puzzle of why we begin to lose our hair as we get older,” Dr. Marc Avram, a professor of dermatology at New York’s Weill Cornell Medical College, told TODAY.
This new discovery could not only reverse hair loss, but it could also reverse many of the emotional problems men face when losing their hair.
“What I see in my patients is when we can restore the hair, not only does it make them feel better about themselves but it restores their self-confidence,” Dr. Marc Dauer, a hair transplant specialist in Los Angeles. “This research that we’ve come up with is fantastic news for us.”
Researchers say it’s too soon to guess when a cure could be created.
Propecia, an option to prevent hair loss
While there is no cure for baldness, some men turn to an oral medication to prevent hair loss. Doctors believe hair loss happens when a substance called dihydrotesterone (DHT) begins to shrink hair follicles. Propecia stops DHT and in turn stops hair from falling out. It not only stops hair loss, it also stimulates the scalp and encourages new hair growth.
Clinical studies have shown 9 out of 10 men who take Propecia had visible results. Propecia is available through Edrugstore.com.
