Why You Shouldn’t Mix ‘Female Viagra’ and Alcohol

Women who take the sexual enhancement drug Addyi should abstain from drinking alcohol for as long as they’re on the medication. Combining the two can lead to a dangerous interaction that can cause problems like fainting.

Alcoholic beverages are a known favorite of men across the planet. Beer and spirits are consumed in large quantities by males in every country each day and night, especially in the United States and across European countries. What may fail to realize is that women also enjoy having a drink now and then, mostly by sipping on a glass of wine or by having a wine cooler. For men, the enjoyment of alcohol has come with a warning in the last decade: use caution when imbibing after taking sexual health aids, such as Viagra. The problem here is the potential for blood pressure issues. But what about women, alcohol, and “female Viagra”?

Studies Still Need to be Conducted

While certain female sexual health stimulants have been considered safe on their own, including medications like flibanserin (trade name Addyi), the effects of alcohol in conjunction with the use of these medications is still not widely known. This means that alcohol use while on such medications is not recommended, and women who choose to drink alcoholic beverage before, during, or shortly after ingesting Flibanserin or Addyi after playing a dangerous game.

Why This Can Quickly Become a Problem

Alcohol is known far and wide to reduce inhibitions, strengthen libidos, and generally get sexual tensions to loosen. Many women, and men, use alcohol specifically to help the sexual process. For some individuals, this means having a drink or two together at a bar, while for others, it may mean sharing a few bottles of wine at a hotel room.

This issue here is a few-fold. First, different people, as mentioned, have different tolerances for alcohol. If you’re a woman who wants to make it easier to get in the mood, you may be dealing with a man who has a much higher tolerance for alcohol if you’re doing the bar scene. This can lead to date rape, alcohol poisoning, and more. The situation is then made worse if you’re taking female sexual stimulants as these have not been widely studied in relation to alcohol interaction.

Also, because of the sexual stimulants, combined with the alcoholic chemicals floating through your system, you may be more willing to take chances that you might not have otherwise been willing to take. Drinking to excess is one thing, and taking female sexual stimulants is another, but when combined, this combination could potentially lead you to do things that you’ll end up regretting.

Addyi is a Neurological Medication

When it comes to male sexual enhancement drugs, like Viagra, most work through physiological interactions. Essentially, they stimulate blood flow to the penis, allowing it to become erect where it was unable to before. In a nutshell, a man who takes Viagra will obtain an erection whether he is sexually stimulated or not. For women, however, drugs like Addyi act within the brain on neurotransmitters.

This is the same type of interaction that anti-depressants have on patients, and in limited studies, alcohol use while taking such drugs has been shown to be mentally and emotionally disruptive. Because “female Viagra” medications are still so new, it would be a good idea to avoid alcohol while taking them, even if it seems like having a few glasses of wine to lighten the mood would be a good idea. The potential results may not be at all what you’re looking for.

How Long Can You Abstain From Alcohol?

Another key point to make is that Addyi must be taken daily in order to be effective, and even then, it can take up to a month for the drug to fully take effect. This means that if you enjoy a few drinks on a Friday or Saturday afternoon r evening, you’ll have to cut those out. Male sexual enhancement medications, by and large, can be taken an hour before sexual activity, and they wear off a few hours after. When it comes to female sexual enhancement medications, the dose will need to be an ongoing, daily medication, even if you aren’t in the mood or do not plan on having sex within the next 24 hours.

Alcohol and Blood Pressure

Repeated, long-term alcohol use, typically defined as having more than three drinks per day in one sitting, can lead to high blood pressure. Interestingly, the use of Addyi and alcohol has shown that the combination can result in dangerously low blood pressure levels. When this occurs, the user may pass out or even have potentially fatal results. Everyone hears about high blood pressure on the news and through commercials for medications, but low blood pressure means that the heart doesn’t have enough blood to pump, leaving it and the rest of the body’s organs starving for nutrients and oxygen.

Testing Has Been Sparse

Because Addyi is a relatively new drug, testing has been sparse, and testing involving alcohol use in conjunction with this medication has been even less reliable. Once again, the drug itself has been tested as safe, but tests involving alcohol use in patients on Addyi is few and far between at the moment. As such, it would be best to avoid alcohol entirely while on Addyi. This is especially important for women who have experienced alcohol dependence in the past, women who are pregnant or who are nursing, and women who have experienced kidney or liver disease. Your sexual desire should never supersede your overall health or the health of others.

Women who take the drug Addyi (flibanserin) are strongly advised to abstain completely from alcohol.

Medication May Not Be for You

When it comes to female sexuality, there are a number of major differences compared to male sexuality. As a result, sexual dysfunction on the female side may not be a dysfunction at all. There are a number of reasons why females may not get in the mood, including age, emotion, recent childbirth, and more. For example, women going through the after-effects of childbirth may not be able to perform due to libido issues, something directly related to hormones. Likewise, women who are going through menopause typically have a drop in libido as their hormones regulate themselves. These periods can last for days, weeks, months, or even longer, but intervention is not always the best course of action.

Emotional issues can also cause women to cease sexual interest. When with a husband or partner who is not providing adequate attention in a relationship, women tend to feel sexually isolated, and this can snowball into a situation where neither partner is interested in sex or receiving what he nor she desires. The door then opens for affairs and cheating, further complicating and already complicated sexual landscape. When this happens, either the other partner finds out and chaos ensues or the other partner does not find out and guilt rises, leading to additional strife.

Getting in the Mood Without Alcohol

Prior to trying medications or relying on alcohol, women who have found their love lives in a rut need to consider a few alternatives. First, communicate with your partner. Talk to him and let him know what is blocking your desire. Perhaps you’ve been stressed at work. If you’re a stay-at-home mom, maybe the baby or toddler has kept you so busy that you don’t have the energy to get in the mood. If you’ve recently given birth and are breastfeeding, this could also be sapping your energy and hormones.

Regardless, talk to your spouse and relate how you’re feeling. This can go a long way in dealing with pent up concerns that you may both be dealing with. Through communication, you can find the best way to work through problems for both of you.

Talk to Your Primary Care Physician

Another solution is to talk to your primary care physician. He or she should be able to provide you with solutions, including possible medications to assist you in feeling like yourself again. It’s important to point out that, sometimes, medications will only mask the real problem. For example, if you simply aren’t attracted to your spouse due to continued attitude issues or abuse, no amount of prescription medication in the world is going to change that. As a result, be open and honest with your physician so that he or she does not prescribe unnecessary medications and lay undue financial burdens upon you.

With this stated, if medications can help, seek them out. In the past, female sexual enhancement was not only unheard of, but it was taboo, even in the medical community. Today, you have options, so don’t continue living your life as if there is no hope. You and your partner deserve what’s best, so never count out controversial options.
