Studies on erectile dysfunction, sperm and testosterone

There have been several studies on the soya bean’s effects on men’s sexual health.

A 1995 study on male rats found that when they were given large doses of a soya-bean and soya-product compound while in utero, the growth of their sexual organs was stunted. The same was true of a study from 2000.

In one 2008 study, researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health found that men who ate an average half serving of soya foods daily had lower sperm concentration, especially if they were overweight or obese.

In 2011, one study followed a 19-year-old male, type-one diabetic who followed a vegan diet containing lots of soya. The researchers linked his erectile dysfunction and hyposexuality to the soya consumption, noting that his testosterone levels had also significantly decreased.

But it’s important to consider that rats and humans don’t metabolize soya in the same way and many of the studies on the effects of soya on animals include extremely high doses of soya—more than a human would likely eat.
