Viagra has changed the lives of men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It’s a safe and reliable way to get and keep an erection when you need it. Some men who ask for the drug hope it will help them stay hard even after ejaculation.
But does Viagra keep you hard after orgasm? Not really. The little blue pill cannot guarantee a non-stop erection after orgasm, but studies show it can significantly shorten the resting period between erections.
How Long Does Viagra Work?
Viagra helps men with ED achieve and keep an erection within a time window of about four hours. The active substance needs 30 to 60 minutes to get into your system. This means you should take the pill about an hour before planned intercourse. Its effectiveness will not be as high at four hours as at one or two hours after taking it.
It’s important to understand that Viagra does not guarantee a four-hour-long erection once you get hard. If you have an orgasm and ejaculate, your penis will soften. This is a normal reaction of the body and Viagra was not designed to override it. On a positive note, sildenafil may help you recover quickly if you’re anticipating a long sexual session.
Viagra Shortens Refractory Period
One clinical study examined the effects of sildenafil, the active ingredient of Viagra, on young and healthy men. Researchers found out that the popular ED drug did not improve erections in men without erectile dysfunction. There was, however, one positive side effect: Viagra significantly shortened the refractory period.
On average, those who took Viagra were able to have another erection 5-1/2 minutes after an orgasm, compared to almost 15 minutes without taking the pill.
Another study, conducted in 2005 on a group of men aged 18 to 65 and suffering from premature ejaculation, also showed a reduction in refractory period and increased ejaculatory confidence.
How to Stay Hard After Orgasm
Viagra can help you get back up again faster, but it will not keep you hard after your orgasm. Are there other ways to keep an erection a bit longer after ejaculating? This question is especially important for men who are not able to last long and want to keep their partners satisfied. Here’s what you can do to keep the erection after orgasm:
Use a Penis Ring
Nature is hard to cheat. If you want to stay hard after ejaculation, your best bet is to wear a special ring at the base of your penis. The ring restricts blood flow and helps you stay erect, even after an orgasm. Your erection will eventually subside, but it should last longer. Remember not to keep the ring on for longer than 20 minutes at a time.
Work Those Muscles
Anecdotal evidence suggests that good control of pelvic floor muscles allows men to stay hard after ejaculation. Those muscles, commonly known as Kegels, are the same muscles you use to stop the flow of urine. The exercises are simple and don’t take much time. Might be worth a try!
Pleasure Beyond Intercourse
You don’t need to rely on a non-stop erection to satisfy your partner. Give your body time to rest and recover. In the meantime, get creative! Here are a few ways to do that.
Focus On Your Lover
If your erection wanes or you have to wait for the next one, you can give your lover oral pleasure. If your partner is a woman, this may be the quickest way to get her to orgasm anyway. And if you feel too tired, stroke her or him gently to deepen the intimacy while you gather strength for the next round. Sex is so much more than intercourse!
Play With Toys
Sex toys are the best friend of tired lovers. If your erection fails or you need a break, reach for a vibrator or clitoral stimulator and continue the fun! The choice of sex toys is endless — everyone will find something suitable, regardless of gender or sexual identity.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Clitoral stimulator. Most women can easily climax when their clitoris is stimulated. Some produce gentle sucking action, while others work with sonic waves and pulses to give her a sensation similar to oral sex.
- Rabbit vibrator. This is another great solution for people with vaginas. The internal part will give them a sensation similar to intercourse while the external vibrator will keep buzzing on the clitoris. Win-win!
- Prostate massagers. Some men love these gadgets because they can create a very special orgasmic sensation. There’s a bit of a learning curve with them, but they’re well worth it!
- Masturbation toys for trans men. These days, you can find special masturbation devices for trans men, designed with their specific needs in mind.
Push The Boundaries
Even if you’ve never imagined yourself role playing or enjoying a sexy spanking session, erectile dysfunction may convince you to reconsider. BDSM (bondage, discipline, sadism, and masochism) is so popular because it offers endless ways to find pleasure without penetrative intercourse.
While some people like sensation play (for example spanking or hot wax on their skin), others get aroused and climax with mind games alone. Before you start experimenting, make sure you know how to do it safely. Watch an educational video, attend a workshop, or read a book on the topic.
Don’t Let ED Put Your Sex Life on Hold
If you suspect you may be suffering from ED, don’t put your intimate life on hold. Talk to the doctor and ask about the right treatment. Pills such as Viagra, Cialis, or Levitra are effective and safe for most men.
