Cialis vs. Viagra: Which Is Cheaper?

The costs for the recommended starting doses of Cialis and Viagra are virtually identical at eDrugstore, allowing consumers to go with the drug that best fits their lifestyle. When it comes to generics, tadalafil (Cialis) is less expensive than sildenafil (Viagra).

Among the erectile dysfunction drugs that are taken as needed, Viagra and Cialis are clearly the most popular, particularly when sales of each drug’s generic alternative are also taken into account.

For those who are new to ED drugs, the question of which drug to choose almost inevitably arises. Although there are multiple factors — onset and duration of action, side effects, for example — that must be taken into consideration, for most consumers the primary consideration is price.

It’s a Toss-Up Pricewise

And looking at price alone between these two very popular ED drugs, it turns out that it’s pretty much a toss-up. Using currently posted prices (including the 9 percent coupon discount now on offer) at eDrugstore.com as our guideline, we found that the cost of a 50-milligram dose of brand-name Viagra is $46.87, only 45 cents less than the $47.32 cost for a recommended starting dose of Cialis.

The 45-cent differential is more than offset when one considers that Cialis delivers far longer-lasting effectiveness (up to 36 hours) than Viagra, which is effective for four to five hours at most. However, for the many men with ED who are content to be able to engage in sexual activity once or twice a week at most, Cialis’s longer-lasting effectiveness is not really a major selling point.

Tadalafil Cheaper Than Sildenafil

Should you opt for the generic equivalents of these two popular ED drugs, a 10-milligram dose (the recommended starting dose, or RSD) of tadalafil, the generic alternative to Cialis, is almost $3 less expensive than sildenafil, the generic equivalent of Viagra. At eDrugstore, a 50-milligram dose (the RSD) of sildenafil costs $25.03, which is $2.73 higher than the $22.30 charged for a 10-milligram dose of tadalafil.

The costs per recommended starting dose of all medications in this article are calculated based on the price posted for a higher-strength tablet, which can then be split in half to yield two recommended starting doses of the drug in question. Drug manufacturers’ prices for varying sized tablets of the same drug are usually identical, so it makes financial sense to buy the higher-strength tablets and cut them in half.

What About Other Factors?

As previously noted, it’s important to take into consideration a number of other factors when choosing the ED drug that’s right for you. While Cialis and tadalafil last far longer than Viagra/sildenafil, they may take up to two hours to become fully effective. Viagra/sildenafil usually reaches maximum concentrations in the bloodstream in 60 minutes or less.

And although both drugs have side effects, most of which are mild, it’s worth noting that the longer-lasting erection-friendly effects of Cialis/tadalafil also come with a longer period of possible side effects.

For men who have sex more frequently than others, Cialis/tadalafil is probably the ideal treatment because those drugs offer up to 36 hours of effectiveness. Thus a dose taken at about 9 p.m. on Friday wouldn’t wear off until roughly 9 a.m. Sunday morning. During the intervening hours, sexual activity could be much more spontaneous than would be the case if a pill had to be taken before each round of sexual activity.
