Bust in Toronto: Fake Viagra Still a Problem

Health Canada’s seizure of fake Viagra from a Toronto-area adult store is just one more indication of the growing problem with counterfeit drugs.

The recent seizure of fake Viagra from an adult store in the Toronto suburb of Scarborough is just another skirmish in the continuing war against counterfeit medications.

Viagra and other erectile dysfunction medications have long been favorite targets of drug counterfeiters who have perfected their skills at churning out look-alike fakes that can fool even the experts, at least at first glance.

Confirmed Fake by Pfizer

Health Canada, which made the seizure, reported that the lot number on the fake Viagra is B/14830238, which the agency has confirmed with Pfizer is counterfeit and has not been “assessed for safety, effectiveness, and quality.”

The agency cautioned consumers who might already have purchased Viagra with that lot number to immediately stop using the drug.

Along with the fake Viagra, Health Canada’s raid on the Scarborough adult store resulted in the seizure of 14 other unauthorized health products, including herbal male enhancement products and recreational drugs known as “poppers.” The latter are nitrate-based inhalants and could cause serious health problems if used at the same time as Viagra. Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in Viagra, and nitrates significantly lower blood pressure; when taken together, they could cause a potentially life-threatening drop in blood pressure.

Global Alarm Sounded

Earlier in 2019, the World Health Organization, headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, issued a warning about the worldwide trade in counterfeit drugs, which has become a multibillion-dollar problem.

Counterfeiters go to elaborate lengths to ensure that their fake versions of popular brand-name pharmaceuticals look virtually identical to the real article. However, they have no scruples about the methods they use to accomplish that goal.

May Contain Real Active Ingredient

Sometimes, the fake drugs actually contain some level of the real drug’s active ingredient, but it may be so little that it’s not really effective or so much that it could be dangerous. To get the coloring of fake Viagra tablets just right, counterfeit drugmakers have been known to use printer ink to replicate that iconic blue of the actual drug. And filler for the fake pills can include such questionable materials as drywall material and newsprint.

Meanwhile, the availability of generic formulations for most brand-name ED drugs offers lower-priced ED treatments that are both safe and effective. Consumers should safeguard their health and avoid any prescription drug products that they suspect may be counterfeit. Usually a price that’s unbelievably low is a dead give-away.

Buying Online Can Be Tricky

Ordering drugs online from vendors of questionable reputation increases your risk of ending up with counterfeit drugs. Don’t buy from an online supplier that has no verifiable U.S. street address or a local area code telephone number consistent with that address.

To ensure that you get the drugs you want at prices that are reasonable and competitive, consider ordering your ED medications from eDrugstore.com, a longtime online facilitator headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. It’s been in business since the late 1990s and offers a limited selection of other lifestyle medications and products in addition to a full range of ED medications — both brand name and generic.

You will need a prescription to purchase the ED drugs. If you have a script from your regulator doctor, you can fax it or scan and email it along with your order. If not, eDrugstore can arrange a complimentary online consultation with a licensed U.S. physician who can authorize a prescription if appropriate.
