Tadalafil/finasteride Combination Pill for BPH and ED Submitted to FDA

Highlights:

  • A new pill may soon be available to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and erectile dysfunction (ED) by combining Cialis (tadalafil) and finasteride (brand name Propecia).
  • The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved an addition to the Cialis label to include treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in 2014. The new drug will combine the two into a single pill.
  • Research shows that Cialis for daily use in combination with finasteride significantly improves the lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) of BPH.

Curious about what this combination treatment can do for you? Read on for all the details about combining Cialis for daily use with finasteride.

How is Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) Related to ED?

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is characterized by prostate enlargement. BPH can also cause bladder symptoms, such as needing to use the bathroom urgently and frequently. Any condition that affects the prostate can also affect sexual health and performance.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a condition characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection. Research shows that men with ED may also experience BPH symptoms.

What are Tadalafil and Finasteride?

Tadalafil is the generic version of the prescription drug Cialis. It is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat ED and is also approved to treat symptoms of BPH. Tadalafil is highly effective at treating ED and comes in versions for either daily or as-needed use.

Finasteride is a type II 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor that is approved to treat BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. (It’s also known as Propecia and may sound familiar, as it’s also prescribed to treat hair loss.) Finasteride on its own can take up to 6 to 12 months to demonstrate improvement in bladder symptoms for patients with BPH.

What Does Research Say About Combining Tadalafil and Finasteride?

Research shows that Cialis 5 milligram for daily use, in combination with finasteride, can treat both BPH and ED faster than taking either treatment independently.

The study the FDA used to approve Cialis for BPH treatment was published in the Journal of Urology in 2014. Here are the key takeaways of the study:

  • The methods. The study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, 26-week clinical trial assessment. It aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of using Cialis 5 milligram for daily use co-administered with finasteride 5 milligrams compared to placebo administration in men with BPH. They used changes in the International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS) to monitor for BPH symptom improvement. The study participants included 696 men, aged 45 years and older, all living with enlarged prostates. It included 70 sites in 13 different countries.
  • The results. The participants given Cialis 5 milligrams for daily use with finasteride 5 milligrams showed significant BPH symptom improvements when compared to the participants given a placebo. Secondary results included that the participants demonstrated significant improvement in both BPH and ED 26 weeks following the study.
  • The conclusion. Co-administration of Cialis 5 milligram for daily use and finasteride significantly improves BPH symptoms. This combination of treatment methods also provides relief from ED symptoms. Symptom relief begins at approximately 4 weeks, which is earlier than when either medication is administered independently.

Is the Tadalafil/Finasteride Combination Right for Me?

Tadalafil and finasteride are approved for use in most men living with ED or BPH. However, like with any medication that can affect blood pressure, ED medications like tadalafil should never be taken with nitrates. Men living with heart or blood pressure conditions should confirm with their provider before taking any medications for ED.

You should never take tadalafil or finasteride without a prescription from your provider. If you experience any symptoms of allergic reaction, a drop in blood pressure, or any other worrying side effects, you should see your provider right away.

When Will the New Pill be Available?

Veru, Inc., an oncology pharmaceutical company, applied for FDA approval of Tadfin in February 2021. They are anticipating recommending approval by the end of 2021. While men can take tadalafil and finasteride individually until then, the company predicts that the combination pill will result in easier compliance, meaning that it will be easier for men to take without risk of disrupting treatment.
