The average prices of Levitra and vardenafil declined slightly from February to March 2020. However, prices for both drugs were down sharply from their mid-2019 levels.
The average price of Levitra dropped 40 cents from $56.52 in February to $56.12 in March 2020, according to data from Secure Medical’s monthly review of select prescription drug prices. The average price of vardenafil, Levitra’s generic equivalent, also edged downward from $21.18 in February to $21.12 in March.
While average prices for Levitra and vardenafil were relatively stable from February into March, their March prices were sharply lower than those posted in mid-2019.
Comparisons to Mid-2019 Prices
Levitra’s March 2020 price of $56.12 was 10.9 percent lower than its average price of $62.98 in July 2019. Even more dramatic was the drop in vardenafil’s price from $48.88 in July 2019 to $21.12 in March 2020, a decline of 56.8 percent.
Levitra/vardenafil are among the Big Three erectile dysfunction drugs, which also include Viagra/sildenafil and Cialis/tadalafil. However, as the lowest-selling of the Big Three, prices for Levitra and vardenafil have been relatively soft over the past year.
Onset, Duration of Action
Levitra and vardenafil are most like Viagra and sildenafil in terms of onset and duration of action. They are all designed to be taken as needed, usually 30 to 60 minutes before the anticipated start of sexual activity. The effects of Viagra/sildenafil usually last up to four hours, while those of Levitra/vardenafil are slightly longer, up to five hours.
Prices for both Levitra and vardenafil are quoted for a single 20 mg tablet of either the brand-name drug or its generic counterpart. The recommended daily dose for these drugs is 10 mg. However, the prices for 10 and 20 mg tablets are identical, so it makes sense to buy the higher-strength pill and then split it to yield two 10 mg doses. This in effect gives you two doses for the price of one.
Publix Had Lowest Levitra Price
Among the retail pharmacies included in Secure Medical’s monthly price review, Publix had the lowest price for 20 mg Levitra at $52.13 in March. The next-lowest price was Walmart at $54.90. That puts the cost of a 10 mg dose of the drug at $26.07 from Publix and $27.45 from Walmart.
Costco Had Lowest Vardenafil Price
Turning to Levitra’s generic equivalent, the lowest price quoted for 20 mg vardenafil in March was $12.40 at Costco, bringing the cost per 10 mg dose to only $6.20. The next-lowest price was $15.50 (or $7.75 per 10 mg dose), available at both Kroger and Publix.
Levitra was the last of the Big Three ED drugs to face generic competition, which began with the introduction of vardenafil in the fall of 2018. This followed the introduction of tadalafil, the generic equivalent of Cialis, barely a month earlier. Viagra’s generic equivalent, sildenafil, made its bow in December 2017, although the extent of that generic competition was limited under an agreement between Pfizer and generic drugmaker Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
