Is Olive Oil Really ‘Better Than Viagra’ for Treating ED?

It’s hard to overstate the health benefits of olive oil, the healthy fat that is central to the popular Mediterranean diet. It can help to preserve erectile function, but it’s not a cure for erectile dysfunction.

Olive oil, one of the healthiest dietary fats available, is at the heart of the so-called Mediterranean diet, an eating plan long touted as a diet that promotes cardiovascular health. And keeping your arteries in good working order goes a long way toward promoting optimal erectile function.

A new study conducted by a Greek research team affiliated with the University of Athens found that copious daily amounts of olive oil appear to promote robust erectile function and even increase testosterone levels. The latter is significant, because the primary male sex hormone plays a key role in regulating sexual desire, and deficiencies are sometimes associated with a decline in sexual desire.

Researchers Recruit 660 Men

The Greek researchers recruited 660 men with an average age of 67 for a study to evaluate the effects of a strictly observed Mediterranean diet on sexual health and function. As noted previously, olive oil is central to this highly recommended diet, which essentially copies the traditional eating habits of people living in the Mediterranean basin.

The diet puts an emphasis on plant-based foods, including fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains. Red meat consumption is extremely limited, but fish and other seafood is eaten in moderation. Olive oil replaces butter and other less healthy fats in the Mediterranean diet.

Diet Cuts ED Risk Sharply

Researchers found that men who adhered faithfully to the diet reduced their risk of erectile dysfunction by as much as 40 percent, according to an article posted at MedicalDaily.com. They also found that men who consumed nine tablespoons or more of olive oil weekly not only reduced their risk of ED but also sharply increased their blood levels of testosterone.

The study also found that only one-fifth of the men in the study reported symptoms of ED, a very low percentage in a study group of older men.

Christina Chrysohoou, lead author of the study, said that the Mediterranean diet and high olive oil consumption “is a drug-free solution that allows men to keep their sexual function. But also a long-term answer to protecting a man’s ability to perform in the bedroom.”

Olive Oil Is Not a Cure

While there seems to be little doubt that the Mediterranean diet and olive oil in particular can play a significant role in preserving healthy erectile function for as long as possible, it certainly doesn’t qualify as a cure for ED. Men who already experience symptoms of impotence might be able to regain some degree of erectile function by adhering strictly to this diet. However, the diet alone is unlikely to enable men with ED to resume active sex lives.

For now, Viagra and the other oral ED drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors are the treatment of choice for men who are already suffering from ED. They won’t permanently restore normal erectile function, but they do temporarily enable men with ED to get and keep an erection suitable for intercourse.

The Mediterranean diet and olive oil, its central pillar, can help to ensure that men promote sound vascular health, which in turn supports improved erectile function.
