Horny Goat Weed May Help Fight ED

Horny goat weed or epimedium has long been a favorite ED remedy among folk medicine practitioners. Now research reveals that it may well play a key role in the fight against erectile dysfunction by protecting good cholesterol.

Throughout the ages and long before the dawn of modern medicine, horny goat weed has been among the most popular and enduring of the many herbal remedies used to fight erectile dysfunction. Scientifically known as epimedium, horny goat weed grows throughout most of China, other parts of Asia, and in the Mediterranean basin.

A recent Korean study has uncovered what could be scientific justification for horny goat weed’s use as a treatment for ED. It appears that the herb’s interaction with cholesterol is at the heart of its erection-friendly effects.

High Cholesterol Can Lead to ED

Almost everyone today recognizes that cholesterol, particularly too much bad cholesterol, also known as low-density lipoprotein (LDL), can be hazardous to your health. And the oxidation of cholesterol significantly increases the health risk that these lipids can cause.

Helping to offset the adverse health effects of LDL is high-density lipoprotein, which not surprisingly is known as good cholesterol.

However, both these forms of cholesterol — good and bad — can become a health threat when they are oxidized, a process that’s carried out by interaction with free radicals. The latter are unstable atoms that cause the cellular damage associated with both aging and disease.

Cholesterol’s Role in Atherosclerosis

And oxidized LDL eventually leads to a buildup of fatty plaques on the inner walls of arteries, a condition known as atherosclerosis and a contributing cause of ED. While HDL helps to reduce the damage caused by LDL, once the former has become oxidized its effectiveness as an LDL antagonist is effectively neutralized.

And it is here that horny goat weed comes into play, according to a study published in the May 2019 issue of Nutrients. Two researchers from South Korea’s Duksung Women’s University found that horny goat weed helped to prevent the oxidation of HDL, thus preserving its effectiveness as a weapon against LDL.

Further Study Needed

In the conclusion to their study, the researchers suggest that horny goat weed in supplement form could help in the fight against ED. However, they acknowledge that further study is needed to replicate and confirm their preliminary findings.

The South Korean study is not the first to find some value in the use of horny goat weed as a treatment for ED. According to WebMD.com, a 2008 study found that the herb also inhibits the effects of the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, which interferes with optimal blood flow to the penis. This is the same mechanism used by Viagra and the other oral ED medications known collectively as PDE5 inhibitors.

While taking a horny goat weed supplement might help to improve or restore erectile function, a more effective means of fighting ED is readily available to men today in the form of Viagra or its generic equivalent, sildenafil citrate. And you might find that you can save time and money by ordering Viagra or one of the other PDE5 inhibitors from eDrugstore.com, a longtime online facilitator based in Tempe, Arizona.

Generic equivalents of Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra, all of which are available from eDrugstore, offer an even less expensive way of fighting ED. To learn more, visit eDrugstore’s Erectile Dysfunction page.
