COVID May Cause Erectile Dysfunction. Mask Up Guys! [New Study]

2020 has been a challenging year for men, especially with the added stress created by the COVID-19 coronavirus. Many have seen their blood pressure increase as their levels of stress rise, which can cause or exacerbate health issues, including erectile dysfunction (ED). But what about the effect of the virus itself? Does the COVID-19 infection have the potential to cause erectile dysfunction? A new study confirms that yes, it does.

COVID-19 Complications

As scientists learn more about the way the coronavirus affects the body, they build a store of information on how COVID can damage the body. Doctors have found, for example, that multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-A) is a rare but severe complication of some adolescents and adults who contract COVID. MIS-A causes many parts of the body to react to the threat of the virus with inflammation, abdominal pain, low blood pressure, and rashes, among other symptoms.

This system-wide attack on the body by the coronavirus is just one example of how the infection can affect much more than just breathing and the lungs. COVID attacks many of the body’s systems and can have long-lasting effects.

COVID-19 and Erectile Dysfunction

The new study by the Public Health Emergency COVID-19 Initiative indicates that one of the likely long-term effects of infection with the virus is erectile dysfunction. As the study notes, while ED might seem like a “trivial concern” for men in intensive care units, for men who survive infection the likely development of erectile dysfunction is a real concern. Even when men survive the coronavirus, their sexual health is likely to be damaged.

The study, published originally in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation, details how the coronavirus creates a variety of disorders in the male body, including endothelial dysfunction (coronary artery disease), subclinical hypogonadism (dysfunction of the gonads), and impaired pulmonary hemodynamics (blood circulation and oxygen resupply). These disorders affect the working of the male body and contribute to the onset of erectile dysfunction. In addition, the study warns that COVID-19 may impact and worsen cardiovascular conditions, which would further increase the risk of ED.

The authors of the paper note that decades of research have demonstrated how erectile dysfunction is tied intrinsically to systemic health in general. Therefore, as the coronavirus attacks a man’s whole body, it should not be surprising that erectile function and sexual health will be negatively impacted.

What You Can Do to Avoid Erectile Dysfunction Caused by COVID-19

The best thing that you can do to avoid developing or worsening ED caused by the coronavirus is to protect yourself from the virus. The Centers for Disease Control recommends several key steps to protect yourself. These include:

  • Frequent handwashing. Wash with soap for at least 20 seconds or use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.
  • Avoid close contact with others. Stay at least six feet away from people who don’t live in your household.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces daily. Tables, doorknobs, light switches, countertops, handles, desks, phones, keyboards, toilets, faucets, and sinks must be cleaned with disinfectant.
  • Wear a mask that covers your nose and mouth in public settings and when around other people who don’t live in your household. Mask up to keep it up!
