Most Effective Treatments for Herpes: Valtrex & Acyclovir Prescription Medication Available Online

Written by: Daniel Williams, MD

Typically, herpes can’t be eliminated completely. Both Herpes Simplex Virus 1 and 2 lie dormant in nearby nerves between outbreaks and are therefore difficult to treat. Therefore, the primary aim for treatment is to suppress their recurrence and minimize the severity of outbreaks.

The most recent guidelines for the Centers for Disease Control suggest three different medications that can be used to suppress herpes outbreaks and infection severity: Famcyclovir, Valtrex (Valacyclovir) and Acyclovir. Interestingly, Valacyclovir gets converted into acyclovir after it gets in the blood stream – so it’s really the same medication.

These herpes medications have a few a side effects that are not worse than the herpes outbreak itself, such as swelling, itching and rash. One feature to consider when determining which medication may be right for you is the dosing regimen. The most convenient regimen is Valacyclovir at 1 gram twice per day for 7-10 days. Valacyclovir can be expensive, and other less expensive options require that you take the medication 3-5 times per day, so be careful not to miss doses.

Keeping in mind that you can’t cure herpes, having one of these medications stocked at home can be a convenient way to minimize the outbreaks when they do occur. Ask your physician if this is an option for you.

Additionally, you may order Valtrex and Acyclovir online from after you fill out a medical questionnaire. A U.S.-licensed physician may write a prescription for you, especially if you already have a documented diagnosis of herpes.
